Sean auténticas o no las últimas palabras de Goethe pidiendo más luz –Licht! Mehr licht!– lo cierto es que durante ese mes de enero hemos necesitado más luz sobre la luz, el clima y los impuestos.

Las autoridades fueron objeto de burlas porque el PSOE y Podemos atacaron a Mariano Rajoy, y aseguraron que si ellos gobernaban el precio de la luz bajaría. A este obvio incumplimiento se unieron algunas declaraciones poco afortunadas, como cuando la ministra de Hacienda sugirió que el Gobierno no puede bajar el IVA de la electricidad porque lo impide Europa, lo que no es cierto.

Pero el fondo del asunto es otro, y es la falta de luz sobre la luz. Curiosamente, en un mundo donde los Gobiernos presumen de transparencia, hay una notable opacidad sobre dos hechos incuestionables: uno es que son las propias autoridades las que establecen el llamado “mix” energético, que es crucial para la factura final de la electricidad; y el otro es que más de la mitad del precio que pagan los usuarios no tiene que ver con el coste de la energía sino que son impuestos y regulaciones. Dada esta realidad, los debates planteados este mes sobre la supuesta maldad de las empresas eléctricas o del sistema de subasta solo sirven para desviar la atención.

La segunda oscuridad es el clima. Aunque sabemos que una cosa es la borrasca Filomena y otra cosa el clima a largo plazo, resultó desconcertante que después de tanto tiempo en el que nos insistieron en que no nevaba tanto como antes por culpa del cambio climático, cuando se producen nevadas y enfriamientos históricos en el planeta nos digan que es un fenómeno meteorológico temporal.

Por fin, la tercera oscuridad son los nuevos impuestos, por ejemplo, sobre las tecnológicas o las transacciones financieras. Nadie nos aclara en qué medida los ciudadanos corrientes los terminarán pagando en última instancia.

Puede que se extienda la luz sobre estos asuntos. Pero también es posible que la frase de Goethe aludiera a que solo alcanzamos la luz que anhelamos en este mundo tan oscuro cuando lo abandonamos.

Whether or not Goethe´s last words asking for more light –Licht! Mehr licht! – are true, the fact is that during January we have needed more light about electricity, climate and taxes.

The authorities were subjected to ridicule because PSOE and Podemos attacked Mariano Rajoy, and stated that if they governed, the price of electricity would drop. This obvious failure was joined by some rather unfortunate declarations, such as when the Minister of Finance suggested that the government cannot lower the VAT of electricity because Europe prevents it, which is untrue.

However, the core of the matter lies elsewhere, and it is the lack of light about light. Strangely, in a world where Governments boast of transparency, there is notable opacity regarding two unquestionable matters: one of that it is the authorities themselves who establish the so-called energy “mix” which is crucial for the final electricity bill; and the other is that more than half of the price paid by users has nothing to do with the cost of energy, rather it is taxes and regulations. In view of this reality, the debates proposed this month about the supposed evil of electricity companies or the auction system only serve to divert attention.

The second area of darkness is the climate. Although we know that storm Filomena is one thing and the long-term climate is another, it was disconcerting that after so long of people insisting that it didn´t snow as much as before due to climate change, when historic snowfalls and cold snaps occur in the planet, we are told that it is a temporary weather phenomenon.

Lastly, the third darkness is the new taxes, for example, on technology or financial transactions. Nobody clarifies to what extent ordinary citizens will ultimately end up paying.

Perhaps light will be shed on these matters. However, it is also possible that Goethe´s phrase alluded to the fact that we only achieve the light we desire in this very dark world when we leave it.
