Si tuviéramos que presentar al Gobierno una lista de deberes económicos para el año próximo: ¿qué les diríamos?

Ante todo, que reconozcan la situación: 2020 ha sido terrible no solo para la salud sino también para la economía, por los trabajadores que han perdido su empleo y las empresas que han echado el cierre.

Tras el balance de los daños, las Administraciones Públicas deberían abordar la microeconomía y la Hacienda Pública.

La clave de la microeconomía debería ser la flexibilidad, para potenciar la recuperación. Hay que abrir los mercados, empezando por el de trabajo, y reducir costes y regulaciones para facilitar la reconstrucción –es fundamental que los trabajadores en ERTE no acaben en el paro.

En cuanto a la Hacienda Pública, se debe contener el gasto, incrementado durante la pandemia, y bajar los impuestos, para que la fuerza creadora del sector privado encuentre pocos obstáculos a la hora de lanzarse a reparar los males de 2020.

Se dirá que todo esto, aunque podamos sostener que son tareas económicas razonables, no son verdaderamente deberes para el Gobierno, o no son deberes que el Gobierno esté dispuesto a cumplir, porque todo indica que se apresta a recorrer su camino en una dirección contraria. No se trata, pues, de deberes para las autoridades sino sólo de deseos nuestros. No lo niego.

Y, hablando de desear, deseo una Feliz Navidad a todos los lectores de El Periódico de Sotogrande.

Reconozco que, con lo que sabemos hoy, y con lo que cabe temer, es difícil desearos a todos un próspero año nuevo con un mínimo de realismo.

Sin embargo, creo que podemos mirar el futuro con esperanza, al menos por dos motivos. En primer lugar, porque es poco probable que el año próximo vaya a ser peor que el actual. Y, en segundo lugar, porque todos tenemos al menos una razón incuestionable para estar satisfechos, y es un argumento que nadie podrá negar, porque es una verdad evidente: en apenas dos semanas, nada más, 2020 habrá quedado, para siempre, gracias a Dios, atrás.

If we had to give the Government a list of economic homework for next year: what would we tell them?

Above all, they should recognise the situation: 2020 has been terrible, not only for health but also for the economy, for the workers who have lost their job and the companies that have closed down.

After assessing the damage, the Public Administrations should tackle microeconomics and Public Finances.

The key to microeconomics should be flexibility, in order to boost recovery. It is necessary to open the markets, beginning with the labour market, and reduce costs and regulations in order to facilitate reconstruction -it is crucial that the temporary redundancy workers don´t end up unemployed.

With regard to Public Finances, it is necessary to contain spending, which has increased during the pandemic, and lower taxes, so that the creative force of the private sector encounters few obstacles when it comes to embarking on repairing the ills of 2020.

Some will say that all this, although we can state that they are reasonable economic tasks, are not really homework for the Government, or is not homework that the Government is willing to do, because everything indicates that it is getting ready to run in the opposite direction. So, this isn´t homework for the authorities, but rather our wishes. I am not denying it.

And, speaking of wishes, I wish all the readers of El Periódico de Sotogrande a happy Christmas.

I acknowledge that, with what we now know, and with what we can fear, it is difficult to wish everyone a prosperous new year with a minimal amount of realism.

However, I believe that we can look to the future with hope, for at least two reasons. Firstly, because it is unlikely that next year will be worse than the current one. And secondly, because we all at least have one unquestionable reason to be satisfied, and it is a point that nobody can deny, because it is an evident truth: in just two weeks, no more, 2020 will be behind us forever, thank God.
