Los gestores del Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, sede del próximo Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía, demuestran día a día su compromiso pleno con la conservación del medio ambiente y el uso responsable de los recursos naturales, especialmente el agua. Este planteamiento está presente en todos los trabajos de mantenimiento del campo de golf, que buscan la excelencia del estado del césped a través de prácticas sostenibles y respetuosas con la naturaleza y que ofrecerá su impecable presentación a jugadores y espectadores en este torneo del DP World Tour que se celebrará del 19 al 22 de octubre.
La reciente restauración del campo, llevada a cabo entre 2015 y 2018, permitió sentar importantes bases para una gestión de mantenimiento mucho más eficiente y sostenible.
“Utilizamos bermuda 419 certificada en tees, calles y rough, una variedad de clima cálido que necesita menos agua, y redujimos la superficie de césped un 1,9 % (10 150 m2). Además, instalamos 37 kilómetros de drenajes que canalizan el agua hacia los lagos, aprovechando al máximo el agua de la lluvia. Esta red de drenajes, unida a las 75 toneladas de arena silícea que se emplearon en todo el campo, facilita el buen estado de la bermuda en invierno evitando así las resiembras que necesitan mucha agua”, explica Patrick Allende, director de campo.
La eficiencia en el riego es otro de los elementos clave del mantenimiento. El campo se riega con agua regenerada procedente de la estación depuradora de la urbanización de Sotogrande, por lo que se consigue una reutilización completa del agua y se evita tirar al mar un recurso tan preciado como el agua regenerada.
“Disponemos de un moderno sistema de riego con 2245 aspersores gestionados individualmente con un programa de última generación que nos permite ser muy eficientes en el uso del agua. Utilizamos a diario sensores de humedad y estación meteorológica para determinar con muchísima precisión las necesidades hídricas del campo”, añade Allende.
A la compleja red de riego se une un sistema de fertirrigación que permite abonar el campo a través del agua. “Con esta herramienta conseguimos unos altísimos niveles de optimización en el uso de fertilizantes”, detalla el director de campo.
El estudio de impacto medioambiental realizado para la restauración del campo cuantificó en un 20 % el ahorro en consumo de agua como consecuencia de las medidas implementadas. Además, se redujeron un 25 % otros parámetros como la emisión de CO2, la generación de residuos no peligrosos y la emisión de ruido.
De cara a los próximos años, el Real Club de Golf Sotogrande se halla inmerso en un ambicioso programa de instalación de paneles solares para producir energía y sustituir paulatinamente el parque de maquinaria tradicional por otro eléctrico que pueda funcionar con la energía generada en el club.

The managers of Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, home of the next Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía, demonstrate day after day their full commitment to the conservation of the environment and the responsible use of natural resources, especially water. This approach is present in all the maintenance work carried out on the golf course, which seeks excellence in the state of the grass through sustainable and nature-friendly practices and which will offer its impeccable presentation to players and spectators at this DP World Tour tournament to be held from the 19th to the 22nd of October.
The recent refurbishment of the course, carried out between 2015 and 2018, laid important foundations for a much more efficient and sustainable maintenance management.
"We used certified 419 bermuda on tees, fairways and rough, a warm-weather variety that requires less water, and reduced the turf area by 1.9 per cent (10,150 m2). In addition, we installed 37 kilometres of drains that channel water into the lakes, making the most of rainwater. This drainage network, together with the 75 tonnes of silica sand used throughout the field, helps the bermudagrass to stay in good condition in winter, thus avoiding water-intensive reseeding," explains Patrick Allende, field manager.
Efficient irrigation is another key element of maintenance. The course is irrigated with reclaimed water from the Sotogrande urbanisation's water treatment plant, which means that the water is fully reused and a precious resource such as reclaimed water is not thrown into the sea.
"We have a modern irrigation system with 2245 individually managed sprinklers with a state-of-the-art programme that allows us to be very efficient in our use of water. We use daily humidity sensors and a weather station to determine the water needs of the field with great precision," Allende adds.
In addition to the complex irrigation network, there is a fertigation system that allows us to fertilise the field through water. "With this tool, we achieve very high levels of optimisation in the use of fertilisers", says the field manager.
The environmental impact study carried out for the restoration of the field quantified a 20 % saving in water consumption as a result of the measures implemented. In addition, other parameters such as CO2 emissions, non-hazardous waste generation and noise emissions were reduced by 25 %.
For the coming years, the Real Club de Golf Sotogrande is immersed in an ambitious programme to install solar panels to produce energy and gradually replace the traditional machinery with electric machinery that can operate with the energy generated at the club.
