En estas fechas es habitual expresar los mejores deseos para el año próximo, y en particular un deseo económico: prosperidad. Un 2022 realmente próspero debería darnos tres buenas noticias: más crecimiento y empleo, menos inflación y menos impuestos.

Tener una economía y un mercado laboral más dinámicos el año próximo es posible. Aunque los organismos internacionales han ido recortando las estimaciones del Gobierno español para el PIB de 2021, la economía ha crecido con respecto al año anterior, y no se espera que 2022 sea peor que este año. El FMI redujo su estimación para 2021 al 5,7 %, pero elevó la de 2022 al 6,4 %. La Comisión Europea espera que el PIB suba un 4,6 % este año y el 5,5 % el próximo. Y según Funcas la economía ha crecido un 5,1 % en 2021 y lo hará un 6 % en 2022.

Hemos terminado el año con unos ritmos de inflación mensual superiores al 5 %, cifras que España no registraba desde hace treinta años, y que situarán la subida media anual del IPC en 2021 en torno al 2,5 %. Los analistas han ido ajustando al alza sus previsiones, pero la opinión general es que la tasa se irá moderando a lo largo de 2022. Esta opinión, sin embargo, debe ser contrastada con la política monetaria del Banco Central Europeo, porque si continúa siendo expansiva, difícilmente tendremos una inflación muy inferior. Por otro lado, y para complicar más las cosas, si el BCE toma una posición más restrictiva, entonces lo que puede cambiar a la baja son las estimaciones de crecimiento.

En este mundo de incertidumbre, solo hay dos cosas indudablemente ciertas: la muerte y los impuestos, como dijo Benjamín Franklin. Y si las previsiones de aumento del PIB y de los precios pueden ser puestas en duda, la reducción de impuestos que anhela la mayoría de los contribuyentes es imposible. Lo más que podemos pedir es que el aumento de la presión fiscal no sea demasiado asfixiante, y que el dolor sea anestesiado por el crecimiento de la economía.

Around this time, it is normal to make your best wishes for the coming year, and in particular an economic wish: prosperity. A truly prosperous 2022 should give us three pieces of good news: more growth and employment, less inflation and fewer taxes.

Having a more dynamic economy and labour market next year is possible. Although international bodies have reduced the estimations of the Spanish government for GDP in 2021, the economy has grown compared to the previous year, and 2022 is not expected to be worse than this year. The IMF reduced its estimation for 2021 to 5.7%, but raised that of 2022 to 6.4%. The European Commission expects GDP to rise by 4.6% this year and 5.5% next year. And according to Funcas the economy has grown by 5.1% in 2021 and will grow by 6% in 2022.

We have ended the year with monthly inflation rates of over 5%, figures that Spain had not recorded in thirty years, and that will put the average annual increase of the CPI in 2021 at around 2.5%. Analysts have gradually adjusted their forecasts upward, but the general opinion is that the rate will gradually reduce throughout 2022. However, this opinion needs to be balanced against the monetary policy of the European Central Bank, because if it continues to be expansive, it will be difficult to have much lower inflation. On the other hand, and in order to further complicate things, if the ECB takes a more restrictive position, then growth forecasts may change downward.

In this world of uncertainty, there are only two things that are undoubtedly true: death and taxes, as Benjamin Franklin once said. And if he forecasts for the increase in GDP and prices can be questioned, the reduction in taxes that most tax payers crave for is impossible. The most we can ask for is that the increase in tax pressure is not too stifling, and the pain is numbed by the growth of the economy.
