El programa Green Drive impulsa el Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters

Los espectadores del Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters disponen de una herramienta para medir las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero que se generan en sus vuelos, transportes o alojamientos. Después, se les dará algunas pautas para reducir estas emisiones y, por último, en la herramienta de compensación se les ofrecerá un abanico de créditos de carbono certificados que podrán adquirir para subsanar las emisiones que no se pueden evitar ni reducir.

Esta iniciativa se suma a una nueva herramienta pionera en el golf profesional que permite a los jugadores del DP World Tour calcular y compensar sus emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero en sus desplazamientos durante los torneos.

Esta sencilla herramienta permitirá a los jugadores introducir los datos de los vuelos que toman para ir y volver de los torneos y luego adquirir créditos de carbono verificados para compensar sus emisiones. Los créditos de la herramienta son de proyectos acreditados con la certificación Golf Standard que abarcan un buen número de Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible de la ONU. La plataforma se pondrá en marcha al comienzo de la temporada 2025 del DP World Tour en noviembre.

En los últimos años varios jugadores ya han decidido compensar las emisiones generadas en sus desplazamientos. Esta nueva herramienta fomentará su popularización entre los más de 800 miembros del DP World Tour, y se espera que en 2027 un 90% de los jugadores del  DP World Tour, Challenge Tour, Legends Tour y G4D Tour compensen de manera regular estas emisiones.

Rory McIlroy, ganador en cinco ocasiones de la Race to Dubai, lleva cuatro años haciéndolo.

“Los golfistas tenemos la oportunidad de viajar por todo el mundo haciendo lo que más nos gusta, pero soy consciente del impacto que eso tiene en el medio ambiente y por eso hace unos años tomé medidas para compensar mi huella de carbono y hacer que mis viajes sean neutrales en ese aspecto. Creo que, de un modo u otro, todos podemos poner nuestro granito de arena y es genial ver que el DP World Tour ha lanzado esta nueva herramienta para animar a sus miembros a calcular y compensar sus emisiones”, declaraba McIlroy.

El programa Green Drive se desarrolló con el fin de promover la responsabilidad medioambiental, para así generar un impacto positivo en cada uno de los torneos del calendario del circuito. Además, el DP World Tour ha firmado la iniciativa Deporte por la Acción Climática de las Naciones Unidas y se ha comprometido a reducir un 50 % sus emisiones de carbono para 2030, y llegar al cero neto en emisiones de carbono en 2040.

Además, el apoyo local es fundamental en el programa Green Drive y los esfuerzos y el compromiso con la sostenibilidad de la sede del Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters, el Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, brillan con luz propia. La limpieza anual de la playa de Sotogrande (en la que Jorge Campillo y Rasmus Hojgaard ayudaron el año pasado a los alumnos de la International School de Sotogrande), el censo de avifauna que se está llevando a cabo este año y el refrendo de su compromiso medioambiental por medio de la certificación GEO (Golf Environment Organization) dejan patente los objetivos del Real Club de Golf Sotogrande y del Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters.

The Green Drive programme, integrated in the Golf for Good initiative of the DP World Tour, is using a promotion aimed at DP World Tour ticket holders, with fans now able to measure and offset their travel and accommodation greenhouse gas emissions when attending DP World Tour events and enter a prize draw to win a VIP package.

The Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters spectators can use a tool to measure their Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions from flights, transport, and accommodation. After that, they can find some tips and suggestions for ideas on how to best reduce their travel-related emissions. Finally, a portfolio of high-quality certified carbon credits are available in the offsetting tool. These can be purchased to offset travel emissions that cannot be avoided or reduced.

To enter the draw to win a VIP package including accommodation, hospitality, transportation, and more, fans just need to click this link and offset their emissions by purchasing carbon credits from AQ Green Tec.

This initiative adds to a new tool that will allow DP World Tour players to calculate and offset their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions when travelling to and from tournaments – a first for professional golf.

The easy-to-use tool will allow players to input their event related flight information and then purchase verified carbon credits to offset their calculated GHG emissions. Carbon credits in the tool are all from Gold Standard accredited projects that support a range of United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The platform will go live at the start of the 2025 DP World Tour season in November.

Several players have already taken the initiative of offsetting their annual travel in recent years. This new tool will encourage greater take-up across the full 800+ membership, with a target set for 90% of players across the DP World Tour, Challenge Tour, Legends Tour and G4D Tour regularly offsetting their tournament travel by 2027.

Five-time Race to Dubai Champion Rory McIlroy has been offsetting his tournament travel related GHG emissions for the past four years. He said: “As golfers we have the opportunity to travel all over the world doing the job we love, but I do have a conscience about the impact that can have on the environment, and that’s why I began taking steps a few years ago to offset my carbon footprint and make my travel neutral. I think we can all play our part in some way or another, and it’s great to see the DP World Tour launching this new tool to help and encourage members to track and offset their travel.”

The Green Drive programme was developed to promote environmental responsibility in order to generate a positive impact at each of the tournaments on the tour's calendar. In addition, the DP World Tour has signed the United Nations Sport for Climate Action initiative and has committed to reduce its carbon emissions by 50% by 2030, and to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2040.

The annual cleaning of the beach of Sotogrande (in which last year Jorge Campillo and Rasmus Hojgaard helped the International School of Sotogrande students), the birdlife census recently launched and the endorsement of its environmental commitment through the GEO (Golf Environment Organization) certification speak loud about the Real Club de Golf Sotogrande and Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters environmental aims.
