Moriya Jutanugarn elige a Catriona Matthew para Aramco Team Series en Bangkok

La tailandesa Moriya Jutanugarn formará pareja con el icono de la Solheim Cup, Catriona Matthew, en uno de los fourballs principales de las Aramco Team Series - Bangkok de esta semana. La heroína local utilizó su elección como capitana en el draft de anoche para reclutar a la escocesa, 11 veces campeona del Tour y ganadora de un Major, pero quizás más venerada por su papel consecutivo como capitana del Equipo de Europa en la Solheim Cup.  La novata española del Ladies European Tour, Paz Marfa Sans, completará la parte profesional del equipo, que se completará con la incorporación de una golfista amateur, antes de que el juego comience mañana en el Thai Country Club.

"Jugar en mi país de origen es muy emocionante", dijo Jutanugarn, que hará su segunda aparición en un evento de las Aramco Team Series. "Quería elegir a la leyenda Catriona, ya que me hará sentir mucho más tranquila; quizá también pueda aprender de ella. Estoy muy contenta con mi equipo.

"Para nosotras, creo que sólo se trata de salir, disfrutar y divertirse. Si lo hacemos, estoy segura de que lo haremos bien". Cuando se le preguntó si su capitana de la semana, la número 50 del mundo, era una jugadora a la que respetaba, Matthew dijo: "¡Oh, absolutamente! He jugado mucho con Moriya en la LPGA a lo largo de los años. Hace tiempo que no la veo, así que estoy encantada de jugar juntas y poder ponernos al día".

Jutanugarn fue elegida antes en el draft que su hermana menor, Ariya, que también compite en el Aramco Team Series - Bangkok, un evento añadido al calendario del LET por primera vez este año.

Al igual que su hermana, Ariya también utilizó su selección de capitán para reclutar a una escocesa: Laura Beveridge. La francesa Anne-Charlotte Mora fue la tercera incorporación al equipo. Preguntada por su elección como capitana, la ganadora de dos Major dijo: "No sabía mucho de Laura, pero he estado mirando todas las estadísticas antes de elegirla, así que estoy bastante segura de que va a ayudar al equipo". "Ya nos estamos divirtiendo mucho, hablando de lo que vamos a comer hoy y de dónde está la buena comida tailandesa. Estoy seguro de que vamos a ser un buen equipo".

El debut de esta semana en Bangkok será el primero de los cinco torneos de la Aramco Team Series de un millón de dólares del calendario del LET para 2022, y el primero con el nuevo formato del evento de tres días. Actualizado respecto a las Series inaugurales del año pasado, los equipos competirán ahora en sólo 36 hoyos -el jueves y el viernes del torneo- con 500.000 dólares de premio que se repartirán entre los fourballs de menor puntuación. El último día de juego, el sábado, sólo los 60 jugadores con menor puntuación y los empatados de los dos primeros días volverán al campo para luchar por una parte de otros 500.000 dólares, esta vez en ganancias individuales.

Entre los grandes nombres que competirán con las hermanas Jutanugarn se encuentra la superestrella tailandesa Patty Tavatanakit, que eligió a la finlandesa Noora Komulainen como capitana, y que vuelve a casa para competir como número 13 del mundo. La inglesa Charley Hull cuenta con un impresionante historial en las Aramco Team Series, con tres top ten por equipos y una victoria en solitario en la edición de Nueva York del año pasado. Ha elegido a su buena amiga y compañera inglesa Lauren Taylor como compañera de equipo para la acción de fourball de la semana.

La australiana Whitney Hillier se apoyó en la herencia tailandesa de su madre para reclutar a Chonlada Chayanun, cuyo campo de origen es el campo anfitrión de esta semana, el Thai Country Club.

Las Aramco Team Series - Bangkok dan el pistoletazo de salida a los eventos ATS de 2022, a los que seguirán otros cuatro torneos de un millón de dólares en Londres, Sotogrande, Nueva York y Jeddah.

 Thailand’s Moriya Jutanugarn will partner with Solheim Cup icon Catriona Matthew in one of the headline fourballs at this week’s Aramco Team Series – Bangkok. The hometown hero used her captain’s pick in last night’s pre-tournament draft to recruit the Scot, an 11-time Tour champion and Major-winner, but perhaps most revered for her back-to-back roles captaining Team Europe to Solheim Cup success. 

Spanish Ladies European Tour rookie Paz Marfa Sans will complete the professional side of the team, which will be completed with the addition of an amateur golfer, before play gets underway at Thai Country Club tomorrow. “Playing in my home country is very exciting,” said Jutanugarn, who will be making her second appearance in an Aramco Team Series event. “I wanted to pick the legend Catriona as she’ll make me feel a lot more calm – maybe I can learn from her, as well. I'm really happy with my team. “For us, I think it’s just a case of going out, enjoying it and having fun. If we do, I'm sure we’ll be good!”

Asked if her captain for the week, the world #50, was a player she respected, Matthew said: “Oh, absolutely! I’ve played a lot with Moriya on the LPGA over the years. I haven’t seen her in a wee while, so I’m delighted to be playing together and being able to catch up.” Jutanugarn was one pick earlier in the draft than her younger sister, Ariya, who is also competing in the Aramco Team Series – Bangkok, an event added to the LET calendar for the first time this year. Like her sister, Ariya too used her captain’s selection to recruit a Scot – Laura Beveridge. Anne-Charlotte Mora of France was the third addition to the team. Asked about her captain’s pick, the two-time Major-winner said: “I’ve not known so much about Laura, but I had been looking at all the stats before picking her, so I'm pretty sure she’s going to help the team.

“Already we’re having so much fun, talking about what we’re going to eat today and where the good Thai food is! I’m pretty sure we’re going to be a good team.” This week’s debut Bangkok leg will be the first of five $1million Aramco Team Series tournaments on the LET calendar for 2022 – and the first with the three-day event’s new format. Updated from last year’s inaugural Series, the teams will now compete over only 36 holes – the Thursday and Friday of the tournament – with $500,000 prizemoney being split between the lowest scoring fourballs.

Saturday’s final day of play will see only the lowest scoring 60 players and ties from the opening two days return to the course to battle it out for a share of another $500,000, this time in individual earnings. Big names set to compete with the likes of the Jutanugarn sisters include fellow Thai superstar Patty Tavatanakit, who selected Finland’s Noora Komulainen as her captain’s pick – and who returns home to compete ranked as the world #13. England’s Charley Hull has a blistering Aramco Team Series record, with three top ten team finishes and a solo victory in last year’s New York event. She chose good friend and fellow English golfer Lauren Taylor as her teammate for the week’s fourball action.
