La campaña de las elecciones generales transcurre con los calores propios del verano, pero también con el calor de la actividad frenética de los candidatos, que se agotan en mítines y entrevistas. E incluso en el sentido en que se utiliza la expresión “pasar calor” en mi Argentina natal, es decir, pasar vergüenza.

No se trata simplemente de la reacción de los ciudadanos ante la capacidad que tienen los políticos de engañarnos. Esto es conocido y antiguo. Saki comentó con ironía que ante unas elecciones el candidato siempre se dedica a recopilar “datos útiles y ficciones discretas”.
Se trata de algo más. En los últimos tiempos da la impresión de que la mentira ha consolidado sus posiciones en nuestro mundo político, empezando por la abdicación que hizo Pedro Sánchez de sus compromisos para llegar a la presidencia del Gobierno. Fue tal su descaro que ya se ha convertido en parte del humor popular hablar de “cambios de posición” cuando es obvio que hablamos de mentiras.
La situación no afecta solo a la izquierda, como hemos visto tras el giro de las últimas elecciones municipales y autonómicas, y el espectáculo, en ocasiones bochornoso, que brindaron los dos partidos de la derecha. El diario ABC resumió el panorama con este titular: “El PP ya ha perdido 15 días de campaña en sus enredos con Vox”.
El caso más reciente y deplorable ha sido el de Extremadura, donde finalmente el PP, tal como ha sucedido en otros lugares, y posiblemente suceda después del 23 de julio, ha terminado pactando con Vox después de haber jurado que nunca lo haría. La candidata, y próxima presidenta, María Guardiola, declaró: “Mi palabra no es tan importante como el futuro de los extremeños”. Una afirmación inquietante, pero sin duda verdadera, porque el valor de su palabra es igual a cero. Se dirá que los pactos pueden ser mejores que la continuidad de las administraciones anteriores. No lo niego, pero se comprenderá también la desazón de los votantes.
En todo caso, disfrutemos de estas vacaciones, y ya comentaremos el resultado de las elecciones, que son cálidas en más de un sentido.

The general election campaign is taking place in the heat of summer, but also with the heat of the frenetic activity of the candidates, who are exhausting themselves in rallies and interviews. And even in the sense that the expression “suffering heat” is used in my native Argentina, which is to say, suffering embarrassment.
It isn’t simply about the reaction of citizens to the ability of politicians to fool us. This is well-known and old. Saki commented with irony that when faced with an election a candidate also collects “useful facts and discreet fictions.”
It is about more than that. In recent times there is the impression that lying has established its position in our political world, beginning with Pedro Sánchez neglecting his commitment in order to achieve the presidency of the Government. Such was his nerve that it has become part of popular humour to talk about “changes of stance” when it is obvious that we are talking about lies.
The situation not only affects the left, as we have seen after the twist of the last municipal and regional elections, and the spectacle, sometimes shameful, that the two parties on the right offered. The newspaper ABC summarised the situation with this headline: “The PP has already lost 15 days of the campaign in its mix-ups with Vox.”
The most recent and deplorable case was that of Extremadura, where ultimately the PP, as the case was in other places, and which will possibly be the case after 23 July, has ended up entering agreements with Vox after swearing that it would never do so. The candidate, and future president, María Guardiola declared: “My word isn’t as important as the future of the people of Extremadura.” A worrying statement, but undoubtedly true, because the value of her word is zero. It will be said that the pacts could be better than the continuation of the previous administrations. I won’t deny it, but the uneasiness of the voters will also be felt.
In any case, we should enjoy these holidays, and we will comment on the result of the elections, which are hot in more than one sense.
